Do What Makes Your Heart Happy

A positive lifestyle requires work, both mentally and physically. Let's start with making your heart happy.

Living a life that you are proud of and that you enjoy takes effort.

While I'm no expert, nor am I professional, I do have a few ideas on how to live with a positive mindset; doing what's best for your personal well-being and why it's important to do what makes your heart happy. Doing what makes your heart happy allows you to function in an optimal way, bettering yourself and those around you.

So, to begin, let's recognize the chaos that this world is, or so it seems. We are busy. We are distracted. We have priorities. There's just a lot going on. Being a college student has proven this chaos more than anything before: balancing my social life with my academics, attempting to stay in shape and trying to make money, all while being a type 1 diabetic and a chronic lyme warrior. We all have our own obstacles and set backs, and it's important that we acknowledge those challenges, otherwise they will paralyze us, keeping us from doing what makes our heart happy.

Now that we've established the craziness of our lives, let's figure out what kind's of things we can do to make our heart happy. What set's your soul on fire? What motivates you to wake up in the morning? What could you talk about for hours on end? What relaxes you? What makes you feel like you're on cloud 9? What makes you feel loved? What gives you a feeling of belonging? What makes you feel comfortable? What pushes you to be better? The answers to these questions are the things that you need, they are the things that make your heart happy. The fun thing about the answers to these questions is that they are yours. Nobody else gets to decide the answers for you. Nobody else has permission to judge your answers, and if they do... well it sounds like they don't know how to make their heart happy, so you should share this with them.

I could go on and on about why it's important to make your heart happy, and why taking care of ourselves and making a point to prioritize our well-being is critical for our health, I'm going to keep this post short.

Without the things that make my heart happy, I would not be where I am today, physically or mentally.

A few of the things that make my heart happy include:

  • Dogs - especially my two pups, Twig and Birch

  • Yoga - practicing on my mat is my safe place and being physically active is fun

  • Sunshine - Vitamin D is a necessity

  • Driving - being able to move and leave helps me feel less trapped

  • Photography - taking photos makes me feel more creative than I actually am

  • Sitting Outside - it's just so peaceful, especially with people I love

  • Cabin Time - especially being on the boat, kind of like driving, I feel free

  • Rain - I am living in the PNW after all, but I only like it a couple times a month

So, I hope you'll join me. Let's take care of ourselves.
